Several state Houses of Assembly say consultation and legislative review are behind delays in approving the proposed constitutional change for state police.
Leadership reported that Edo, Osun, Oyo and Rivers had given their concurrence as of the latest checks, while other assemblies were at different stages of considering the document.
The newspaper said the proposal was transmitted by the National Assembly on 16 September. Its report explains that approval from at least 24 of the 36 state assemblies is required for the constitutional alteration to advance.
The 16 October date set for states to return their resolutions was described as an administrative target, rather than a constitutional deadline. Approval by individual assemblies should not be presented as the nationwide establishment of state police. The proposal remains part of an ongoing constitutional process, with consultation and safeguards central to the debate.
