Nigerian consumer sentiment deteriorated in September as households expressed growing concern about prices, according to the Central Bank survey reported by ABN TV.
The overall Consumer Sentiments Index fell to minus 18.7 points from minus 9.9 in August. The source report also says the average price-sentiment reading rose to 33.5 from 23.0.
ABN TV reported that 61.1 per cent of respondents believed faster price increases would weaken the economy. Respondents nevertheless expected confidence to improve over subsequent months.
Those future readings are survey expectations, not guaranteed outcomes. Consumer sentiment describes how respondents view their circumstances and prospects; it should not be confused with the official inflation rate. The results highlight the pressure on household budgets even when other indicators point to an expansion in business activity.
